I have won a scholarship from another organization to go to University College London, UK. I am ceasing all sales of Virtual Real Estate, advertising spots, sponsored posts, links and merchandises on this website. Thank you everyone for your support.
About
Hi my name is Bobby and I am a 20-year-old waiting to enter college in Fall 2009. I have been accepted into the University of California, Berkeley and am currently based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia working in an internet startup.
It has always been my dream to go abroad to do my tertiary education. Though I have technically studied in Anderson Junior College, Singapore for the past 2 years, I would not really count that as an overseas education seeing how Singapore is just a neighbor separated by a small strait.
I wanted to get a scholarship from Khazanah Nasional, a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund to fund my 4 years education in UC Berkeley. I almost won the scholarship - losing out only in the final 4th round of interview - after having brought myself into the final 5 out of the thousands. The scholarship was eventually awarded to 3 students.
I was not on form on the final interview. I messed up, period.
No grudges against Khazanah, but I would not take no from them as a signal to scuttle my plans to go to UC Berkeley.
Dreams do not fade away so easily. They do not die. My philosophy is, if we want something badly enough, we must go all the way in achieving our dreams. My motto in life is to
Dream Big, Dream Differently, Chase the Dream.
Hence the idea of SendBobToBerkeley.com is a radical idea of mine to fundraise some US$150,000 to pay for a 4 years education in UC Berkeley. As an international student, it costs almost US$50,000 per year for college. I would need close to US$200,000 to study in UC Berkeley for 4 years. I would be able to loan $50,000 from Dad to pay for the first year.
Is this crazy? You bet it is. The one thing that I have learnt is to never give up easily on dreams.
I will not take no from Khazanah as an answer to my dream of going to UC Berkeley to study this mid-August. Will I be disappointed again? No way.
UPDATE 1: I was recently informed by another scholarship body after the launch of this website that I was awarded a scholarship to study in University College London. I am not actually looking forward to going to London as I prefer Berkeley due to its proximity to Silicon Valley. My dream is to start a tech company upon graduation and to somehow bring a big tech company back to this region. Khazanah has pretty liberal bond policy that would have allowed me to achieve this dream.
UPDATE 2: I was recently made aware through a copyright infringement notice that BerkeleyBob is a trademarked name of a US business entity and I shall cease using this name from now on. All correspondence shall go by the name of Bobby. My email will now be
Bobby@SendBobToBerkeley.com
UPDATE 3: In the same copyright infringement notice, I was also informed that the sale of virtual US properties without prior approval from the stake owners is illegal. The same can be possibly said about foreign properties. I have since removed all official properties from this website.
